Food Poisoning at Ikea Edmonton

Just moved house, Dan and Jessica and I headed off to the warehouse-wonderland for bits and bobs, went for a meal in the Ikea cafeteria where I had salmon and veggies.

Some time later, I was nauseous, had to go to the ladies' a few times, was still overwhelmingly ill and couldn't walk. On my way out of the mattress showroom I suddenly had to grab one of those yellow bags ... First aid was called and I was still getting rid of the toxic meal. Dan reckons my face was really pale with bright red blotches, and I was really cold despite the shop being stuffy and warm. Ambulance arrived, my blood pressure dropped quite a bit and had to spend the rest of the journey with legs elevated!

In A&E, which was a three-hour wait, Dan and Jessica were brilliant at keeping me amused. At one stage though, my throat was closing up and I lost my voice, and I looked at my hand and wondered what it was for, what my name was, and I had the distinct impression that my stomach was full of metal pipes.

By the time I was seen to, the nausea had passed. The doctor asked all sorts of questions and said that it sounded like food poisoning. Ikea rang yesterday asking how I was. Said nobody else had been affected by the same meal I'd eaten.

It sounds more like an allergic reaction to me. Hope you're feeling better...

Ah... it was really weird! The throat-closing thing and blotchy face are allergic reactions, right? I'm confused because I eat salmon all the time. The ambulance crew was awesome :)

Yeah, that and the low blood pressure, the fact that it came on suddenly and was possibly due to fish, which lots of people are allergic to, although it is a bit unusual to suddenly become allergic to something you've had lots of times before. Perhaps Ikea has some kind of weird Swedish fish though!

Haha, yeah! Maybe what the Ikea calls "salmon" is in actual fact a bottom-feeding species in a toxic lake :)

That sounds awful. :( I hope you're feeling better now. I'd've guessed it would've been something you ate earlier than the salmon though. Fish poisoning tends to take awhile to come on.

I wish I'd have had a better grasp of time during the whole thing - Jessica reckons it took an hour to really hit me. Hadn't eaten much prior to the meal.... Ikea rep said they're testing samples of the dish and will let me know. Might possibly have been the orange jelly I had for dessert? Oddness. Hope you've recovered from your cold!

Yikes, how awful! If it is an allergy I hope you find out what it's to, so you can avoid it in future. Maybe you could ask Ikea for a full ingredient list?

Hope you're feeling better lady! xx

Thank you - I still feel like death :(

Asking for a full ingredient's list is a good idea

I've got no idea whether it was the fish or what, but I'm glad that last time I went to Ikea I had the Swedish Meatballs (more for chuckles than anything else).

But seriously, that sounds nasty. I wish you a fast recovery.

Hiya - I think I'm too weak to go to Leipzig unfortunately. It might be anaemia, but the blood tests tomorrow will confirm. So looking forward to going to Germany :(
